The Little Prince: Chapters X - XV
Character Connection: These chapters are about six adults that the little prince met before his journey took him to Earth. He tells the pilot about the unusual behavior of these adults, giving readers ideas of personalities we meet in our own lives. For this post, include your thoughts about one of the characters mentioned in these chapters and try to make connections with real life. Or, you can follow up a post by another student and make reference to it with your own opinion of that student's ideas. I was particulaly interested in the geographer because although his description of his profession implies one thing, the little prince's observations implies other ideas. The little prince initially thought that geography was interesting and useful. He then discovers that the geographer does not in fact physically confirm the existence of mountains, oceans, deserts or otherwise. He relies on an explorer to supply him with this information whilst he sits and waits at his desk. His next priority is to determine that the explorer is not lying, and then he must have proof. This means that, without an explorer, the geographer is lost. This is true to many - if not all - professions, such as people in court who rely on others for information and proof. They then judge the situation accordingly. It would seem that the little prince questions the geographer's superiority, such that the explorer is just as important. I feel the same way about people today in a sense that some people deserve as much respect as others but do not receive it. To take the matter further, when the little prince mentions that his planet has a flower, the geographer thinks it is unnecessary to say so because it is not eternal, such as mountains or oceans. He also disregards whether a volcano is active or extinct. This shows that he has no concern for the condition of an object as long as it remains there. This portrays the fact that professions are limited and that most problems are overcome by a joint effort.
After the little prince visited the six different planets, he had met six different adults that inhabit on those planets. as his perception, he thought they are very weird. For example, The King commanded him to yawn, The drinker never stop drinking and always very negative or a business man never stop counting, and the oddest things is that a professional geographer do not tell any information or location about places on his planet.
I agree with the little prince, because those adult's personality are really strange, and most of their methods are difficult to understand.
In chapter XII there was inhabited by a drinker.
He drinks because he is shame that he can't stop drinking. But I think he is not trying to stop drinking. his problem is, he put drink bottles next to him so he can always drink, but I think he should put it somewhere else and try to walk around little bit and think what to do and try to exercise or do something.
I like the goegrapher in these chapters. He's the most important person for the little prince and the pilot because he told the little prince to visit the Earth and if he didn't tell him, the pilot counld't meet the little prince.
In addition, these chapters are the most important chapters in this book because you can know the reason for the little prince's visit to Earth
I think these chapters are very important chapters for the little prince because he earned a lot of knowledges from this journey of the planets.
When he decided to depart to the earth and when he was thinking about the flower I thought he has a mind like a children and he is very kind. Also I thought that he is interested to depart to the earth.
From these chapters I satisfied the reason of why the little prince came to this planet which is the earth.
One of the character I thought who is similar in the real life was a drinker. Grown-ups are always drink a lot of alcoholic drink when they are very tired or they want to forgive something shame. I can`t understand why are they drinking for something that cannot solve by doing of that. I can recognize what is the little prince thinking about the grown-ups.
I think that these chapters are just imitating different what some people do. It seems to be a little more extreme than realistic, but that is the reason why it is funny. I think these chapters has lot of meanings and is worth thinking about. I find chapter XIV most interesting because the street lighter is very strict about following orders, while doing so only seems stupid and pointless.
I was thinking why did the little prince came to the Earth. In chapter 15, he was traveling the planets and arrived at a planet of geographer. And the geographer recommended to the little prince to go to the Earth next. I thought the geographer was the most interesting person (perhaps he is not human) because he knows about many planets' geographic feature but not his own planet. He remind of one of my friend who knows many things about world geography but not his own. But it was because he just borned in his country but lived there not even a year. However the geographer lived in the planet for long time. He was really confusing but somehow he was also interesting to me.
Chapter 11
I was interested in chapter 11 because conceited man is living on one of the planet. The reason I chose conceited man because in real life we can see some people are being like him and even I have a friend that very conceit. So the chapter is showing that every different place people have all different personality, as we can see in our life. After I read this I thought that this is showing the little prince met different personality grown ups in many different planet before he visit the earth.
For me, I don’t actually have a favorite character. But I like 3 of them. (Ch. XI; XII; XIV) These characters were the conceited man, the drinker, and the street lamplighter. I admired the conceited man because he was different from the king of course, he didn’t actually boss the little prince around and he made the little prince find the “clapping game” quite fascinated. I found this interesting because I never knew that the little prince may have not known that he could clap. It is a common thing that people clap their hands but for the little prince, this might be something knew that he just learned. I also liked the conceited man because he looked funny. The drinker: the only reason why I like him because he is retarded. He says something and then the little prince doesn’t get it. It if funny how he said he was “Ashamed of drinking”. He was drinking to forget how ashamed it was of drinking. It was so funny to me. The lamplighter: I think he was the first reasonable guy of all the planets the little prince visited although as the conversation went on it turned a little awkward. I found that quite funny when he was “it has been one month already since we’ve had our conversation.” I also found it a little interesting how he said there were one-thousand-four-hundred-and-forty sunsets in 24 hours. These are my opinion towards the planets that the little prince visited or for CH.10 to Ch. 15.
The character that interests me the most was the conceited man because although his personality was funny and always thinking on the bright side, he has no friends and from the little prince’s perspective, he was one of the first people who ever visited this man. The little prince then got to know this man and he noticed that this man wanted to be admired by others. He wanted to be the handsomest, best-dressed, richest, and the most intelligent person on his planet. But with the man being the only one on this planet, he is the only one who can be the handsomest, best-dressed, richest, and the most intelligent person. This means that the little prince can only say that he admires this man, because he was the only person to admire, apart from himself. For this man to do most of his actions, he must be praised or admired by the person that wants him to do the things that he does to amuse others. He wants everyone to think that he is the best in all of the other people on all of the other stars. But for this matter, he does not know how to praise other, but only know how to be praised. The conceited man asks the little prince to admire him the same no matter that he was the only person on this planet. In which the little prince replied that yes he does admire this conceited man, but the little prince doesn’t know how admiring this man can be of any importance to him.
The geographer was interesting to me. I chose it because the geographer does not map out the world himself and relies on explorers give information to him. If the geographer thinks he is the most important and too superior to get out there and map the world. The geographer maps the world he does not know about so how can someone trust someone writing maps where they have never been. Any kind of explorer or person may have come up with some fake proof to make money from the geographer. The little prince thought the man had a real profession but thought differently when he found out that the man is actually doing the real work which the explorers do. The explorers are just as important as the mapper and I think the prince believes that mapping the world should go by traveling it. That was why he was thunderstruck when he found out that explorers and not the geographer find things out from the world. The geographer did not map anything that didn't last long like flowers, and he only cared about the volcanoes and not whether they were active or not. I think the little prince had different thoughts about the geographer after finding out the information, he thought all the adults were weird like the geographer, because the geographer did not map the essential things like flowers which was part of the beautiful world and geographers are supposed to. map it. Throughout the six chapters all the adults were fixed to one thing, and did only what they did in the chapters and nothing else. Non of the adults had a purpose, except the geographer had the purpose of mapping places but the job did not seem important to the little prince for all the job took was getting information from other people to complete his own work. It is just like researching at school for information for a project, but you never get a deep understanding because you perception is different if you are in the situation rather than reading from the Internet or books.
In Chapters X through XV (10 to 15, for those who don't know Roman Numerals very well) of the novel "The Little Prince", I found the representations of the businessman to be interesting as a metaphor to people today. The author portrays the businesssman as a man who is preoccupied with what he "owns" (not "reigns over") and counting his possessions that that is all he simply does. He is portrayed on the opposite end of the spectrum; the prince is an innocent, curious, polite lad who places emphasis on his values and morals (more so than on materialistic things), where as the businessman is a heartless shell of a being. When the prince says, " 'I myself own....., and it is of use to my flower, that I own them. But you are of no use to the stars.' " and the businessman lacks a reply, I was irresistibly reminded of my aforementioned, spectrum-metaphor-related statement. But that is not to say that I don't agree with the prince; there are many, many women and men in this world who are like the businessman; who spend all day sitting at their desk, counting up numbers, counting their money, aiming for more money, and not spending a carefree day strolling through a park and feeding birds. This is the stereotypical image of a businessperson, and one can wonder if this image eminated, or at least was influenced, by this early-1900s novel. Those are my thoughts about the businessman.
And in response to Robin's comment, perhaps the reason why people rely on others (aside from the need to exert power on others, which, face it, everyone wants to do) is maybe to make a clearer picture of events, and from there, decide a course of action. For example, assume a man's wife was murdered. The man obviously has clouded thoughts, but a judge may combine that information with the fact that the woman murdered the entire council present in the first 3 minutes of the United Nations meeting of 1927 using a pair of chopsticks and a rubber chicken. The judge, while perhaps lazy, can certainly put events in perspective, and at least assist in the case. That is not to say the judge is superior, or that he is complete trash, but he does have a role (please note that the United Nations example was purely fiction made off of the top of my head). The same applies to this case in "The Little Prince", although the author might exaggerate the geographer's usefullness slightly. However, I do agree: everyone who contributes in any fashion deserves appropriate credit.
The Little Prince, chapters five to ten, about the little prince’s expedition around the planets have showed me the little prince’s curiosity towards these planets. I really wonder how the little prince could stand the gibberish these people from different planets are talking. I also wonder what the little prince will conspire to do when he gets to Earth. I think the planets the little prince visited are very wretched due to a lack of care ness and perfection towards their planet, compared to the little prince's. What I found interesting was that, when the little prince was talking with the lamplighter on the fifth planet, a month has past since they started talking and also on the planet, you are able to see one thousand four hundred and forty sunsets every twenty four hours. I am looking forward to reading the next chapters and also pondering of what will happen when the little prince visits the planet, Earth.
I think that what yuhei wrote exactly what I had in mind. I do think that I know now why the little price came to earth. Without these chapters, a reader would be wondering the whole time while reading the rest of this book.
I thought these chapters were very interesting because it gives us background detail about the other people that exist on the other planets. It is unique how the author picked those characters and how he explained them by using a simple conversation and the little prince’s perspective of them. I think that each person the little prince encountered affected the way he thought of adults and he will always remember how adults do such odd things in lives.
It’s very creative of the author to create such planets and describe them in entertaining ways. For example, I found it interesting how one of the main descriptions the people used in describing their planets where the volcanoes they had and how some were existent and non existent. This which interesting because I never would have thought other planets had volcanoes too!
I thought that the business man was interesting. He had stars, but he doesn't know what to do with them. He seemed to be lost in greed. I wonder if real business are also lost in greed.
I found the book very interesting and filled with lots of good points through the personality of each character. The personality or the acts of every character are related to our real life perfectly. In chapter 13, the little prince had landed on the fourth planet and met a very busy and serious businessman. He used all his time to count every planet that he owned and recounting over and over. He thinks that the more planets he owns, the richer he will become. He never cares anything even his sickness. The reason why I describe about this business man is because he is a reflection of one of my dad’s close friends who passed away few years ago. He worked for a big famous company and earned lots of money. He worked late at night and early in the morning. He really cares and takes every single of his work seriously. Later on, he got a bad decease and found out it was too late to cure. This happened because he never exercised. Not so long he died.
I learned from his death that working hard is good but health concern is more important. I realize that this businessman is very similar to my father’s friend because they have the same way of living.
In my opinion, the little prince will get back to his planet in the end with lots of knowledge on how to live a better life by the entire lesson that he got from many friends on his journey.
The drunkard reminded me of people in the real world who has a meaningless life. This is because the drunkard just sat there all day and drank to get over his depression of his drinking. This is pointless because it doesn’t get him anywhere and he just kept going around in an endless circle. Drinking did not help the man at all so he was practically spending his whole time doing nothing. Some people in the real world are like this because some spend their lives doing pointless things and they just keep doing it, even though it doesn’t help with anything. For example, a person might smoke because they’re depressed and want to get over it. Then they keep smoking because they keep getting depressed since the smoke makes them unhappy. They eventually get addicted to it because they’re never satisfied. So, the person would be doing this for their whole life and the point of their life would be completely meaningless because they would be doing something that’s not important to them and not helpful. I think that it’s better if people would try to quit their addictions and try to do thing that’s important to them. This is because a person’s life is short and you might not have another chance to experience something that means something to you.
When the prince visited the drinker, it was a very short visit. So it didn't really describe the whys and whats like the other occupations of people on the other planets did. I think this is most challenging for me to relate it to real life than the other people that the little prince visited because I don't really quite understand it as much as the other planets. So I am going to try to relate this one to real life as much as possible.
Some drinkers they drink for fun, others maybe to relieve stress off, or for many other reasons. But like the man who was just drinking to forget, to forget that he was ashamed of drinking, but he still kept doing that anyways. I found that a little bit odd, like the prince. At first, I didn't really understand it.
I think that the drinker was probably sad, and sick of his life. So he's drinking just to forget everything, and maybe before he had never touched a bottle of alcohol, but now he's drinking (for one of the many reasons out there of why people drink). He wants to forget that he's a drinker, so he uses the alcohol to try and forget what he did, or what he just drank again and again.
When the little prince came and visited the drinker's planet, it didn't seem like he wanted company at all, unlike the others. I think the drinker does not want to know anything, or even if that he exists or not, just to forget everything that had happened. And to forget why he was drinking.
I find it very funny when the little prince went to the star where the drunken guy lived. He was drinking because he was ashamed of that he was drinking. I also find the planet where the businessman lived very weird too; the author explained what businessmen were from the perception of a kid. They are very ‘serious’ and always want more and more money plus, they do not think for others. The prince thought that having millions of stars doesn’t get a person anywhere, they only think for themselves. The businessman said that he will get more stars to buy more stars… I guess that when some people grow up, they change to a totally different person, they forget things that are important to them.
I agree with Mint.
Because the little prince didn't know that he could clap, which was kind of odd because that is what everybody knows how to do.
Except that I had a favorite character, and mine was the king because he thought he was so good that he thought he could tell people to do something that they don't want to do. I think that the king can relate to alot of people in the world because some people that are rich think that they can do everything so then they tell people to do something.
Which had a great impact on me because I don't think that it is a nice thing to do, telling people what you want them to do.
I think chapter 8, where it was inhabited by a drinker who was ashamed of him self. He was plunged into deep melancholy; I think the little prince was curious about the drinker’s behavior because he didn't understand why he is drinking that bad stuff in his body. I think that the drinker is aimless and helpless because there weren't any on his planet any ways, there were only full body ready to make him forget and the empty bottles that were emptied together with shames that he had for being a drinker. When the little prince asked why he was ashamed of himself he said he was ashamed of drinking, I think the little prince was bewildered by the words that came out of the drinker. I agree with the little prince that grown ups are decidedly very, very odd. I think he was mystified by this planet and the drinker he visited, and I think he got more curios about how adults act.
During this 6chapters, the little prince met 6 different people, a king, a conceited man, a drinker, a business man, a lamplighter and a geographer.
When i read these chapters, i thought these chapters show adult's personailty and it is supported adults like to figure out (the little prince said this already) like business man but the little prince thought 'adults are strange'
Maybe it is different percepction between adults and kids(children).
From the geographer, he could know the planet Earth and i think he went the Earth and met the Pilot.
Before, he said to the Pilot,
"you are talking like a grown-up"
(p.26)
maybe this sentence, stereotype from upper 6 strange adults.
but also if i was the little prince, i couldn't understand them.
they really strange.
if you want to know their personality, it is simple...
'like to figure out and work hard sometimes they don't look at the other execpt their order or work. it is weak point. also they wanted to be nobility.'
especially, i liked the lamplighter. WHY? because i wanted to be a strugger because i know i'm so lazy. so i usually forget my homework or bring note. so i respect him. of course we have to sleep.
I think the drunkard represents a lot of people in the real world. The drunkard just sits there drinking all day because of his depression of drinking. To me, this is completely useless. Yet, so many people in the real world do this. For example, some smokers may just smoke because they want to forget all their problems (including smoking itself). I think that these types of people should actually stop avoiding their problem and try and solve them instead.
Then, instead of drowning in their self pity and living a meaningless life, they can try and find a meaning in life for them and keep on trying to improve their own life. I think that if people can improve their own life, it will somehow benefit others and ultimately improve our own society.
I think that the business man in chapter XIII of The Little Prince can relate to a lot of the people in the world these days. It appealed to me that the business man was a busy person. As a matter of fact, he was too busy. He spends all day long counting and re-counting 'his' stars that he does not realize anything else that is around him. Being too occupied by one thing will probably distract u from other things that are going on. He doesn't realize that counting the stars won't do him any good since he can't take them, keep them, and take care of them anyways. This reminds me of many people in our society today. Sometimes they are too caught up in their work that they don't notice the little things that are around them. Or somethings they don't notice anything at all. They are too focused on one particular thing to stop and look back at what they've done or why they were doing it in the first place.
I think these chapters describe the people on earth that the Little Prince will get to know on his journey to the Earth.
The business man was the one that made me think the most people like him are always working just to get material things, and they never have time for their family, friends, not even for themselves, its always about work, work that will give you useless material things which you will not take with you when you die, there is only one life given for us and we need to enjoy it.
I thought these chapter has very important things in the little prince because the little prince learned manythings in this chapter. And the little pince went to many planet then he met many people. Then I thought geographer was said the little prince to become a adventurer but the little prince said no. I think geographer was haughtily. The little prince was ignore that. And the little prince thought grown-ups are very absurd. I think so, too because they always use flattery. I cannot understand that. I think people should say truth. I know we sometimes have to use that. But it is not good.
And drinker's planet was very short. I think it has some of meaning because drinker said "I want to forget." I think drinker missed something so he wants to forget.
This chapter shows that The Little Prince visited a lot of the planets where the king lives, a conceited man stays, a drinker complains and others. In these planets he could experience to know various opinions and feel complicated emotion such as melancholy, confusing.
I agree with The Little Prince that he feels the adults are narcissists and like numbers. The adults tend to have their own world and cannot see the other worlds.
Finally, he was recommended to visit the earth. As there are a lot of kinds of people on the earth, he will experience exciting events about thoughts of people.
I think the little prince’s thought is correct, it means my thought is almost same as his thought. He was a child so his thought was like children. I like these chapters because these are very interesting! The little prince visited some planets, and learned something from livers of each planet. Especially I was interested in lamplighter. He can’t take a rest because his job was turn on and turn off the lights on the planets. He needs to do that everyday, but his planet’s time flies very fast! So when the little prince asked him “Can’t you take a rest?” and he replied “NO” I’m very sorry for him. The little prince couldn’t find person who he wanted to meet in these chapters, but I think he can meet good person in the earth!
The author has many good hooks throughout the chapters 10 and 15. I think it is interesting how the author choses each unqiue attitude, for each adult, and includes what the little prince thinks of the individual adults. The adults different actions, descriptions, and attitudes, make me want to continue reading and find out what the author will come up with next. At the end of each chapter the prince also adds his thoughts of how the adult acted. The author has done this well and continues to 'make' the reader, read on into the story to find out what happens next.
When I read the chapter about the conceited man I was surprised to see how egotistical he was. He would only accept positive comments about himself and that just made the little prince negative about the way adults acted. Although the other adults did intrigue the little prince, I personally felt that he liked the lamplighter because even though he was loyal to a useless job, he was still confident about doing it.
The six chapters were quite short but numerous profound meanings were hidden in each chapter. The six adults the Little Prince met represented the casual adults on the Earth, and the chapters undirectly pointed out the problems with them. I especially thought that the lamplighter was very signifant because he listens and obeys orders without thinking why he does it. The actions of the lamplighter were similar to the actions of most grown ups today because they are too obedient to their boss and follow orders without thinking why they really do it. I also thought that the geographer was important because he refuses to study about his own planet, but he studies other planets. That was very awkward because he is never patriotic to his own planet. Overall, the six chapters were quite interesting to me.
The Little Prince visited different planet where he met the king, a conceited man, a drinker, a business man, a lamplighter and a geographer. In these planets he got some of Knowledge about different planets. The Little Prince thought that adults are strange. The geographer didn’t go anywhere except staying in his planet. After visiting these planets he was recommended to go to earth.
When tlp visited the six different planets there were six different personalities. The little prince has a perception that most grown ups are perplexing in a very bad way. But when he visits the lamplighter he gets ver pleased because he is not doing something for himself. I think this is why the little prince likes the pilot so much; because he is doing things that are helping tlp and not only himself.
I was a little confused about why the lamp lighter always would light the lamps, it seemed that he did it for no reason. I also wonder why the little prince saw his job as of some meaning. My favorite part of the chapter was when the little prince met with the king, because he seemed more interesting compared to the other characters. The part that I remember most about this chapter is when the king kept ordering the little prince to do what he had done.
I think the planet represent the author's personlity because the sixth planet was a geographer and some where the in the first or second chapter, it said he learn geographer.
Chapters 10-15 were very perplexing because if I were the little prince, I would have been asking many questions and regretting that I had ever come to these planets. The king seemed very strange because if every single person in the world was living on separate planets, then everyone would be a king or queen of their own. I found that the businessman counting numbers very peculiar as why would he count even though it seemed to have no purpose. The geologist seemed to know everything, but he has never experienced or traveled to the places he was drawing on the map. It seemed that the lamplighter was sad and confused because he didn’t know why he had to light the lamp, then dim it, and then light it again. The little prince seemed to like the lamplighter a lot as a friend. The little prince had many experiences visiting the planets but it seemed as though almost everyone wanted him to leave them alone.
The businessman said that he will get more stars to buy more stars… I guess that when some people grow up, they change to a totally different person, they forget things that are important to them
I was interested in drunker. He was upset about his drinking but he kept on drinking to forget that upsetness. I think it was a bit stupid of him. He would have anything to be upset about if he quit drinking. However, in some way I could understand him. He was trying to avoid the difficult in his life. He was trying to avoid real life. I think conceited man is also interesting. His definition of the "adore" was really werid. I think people should be adored for what they have done good. For example, they should get adored for their great donation.
I like chapter eleven when the conceited man said that admire means to admit that I am the handsomest, the best-dressed, the richest, the most intelligent person on this planet. It would be more realistic if the little prince meet people on Earth.
The two characters I was most interested in was the drunkard and the king. The drunkard was a drinking because it helped him forget about him drinking so much and i thought that that was very peculiar because there was no logic in that.
The king thought that he was great and that he ruled over everyone but he only ruled himself and he was very lonely so every time the little prince wanted t leave he wanted him to stay by promoting him to minister of justice so he could punish a rat.
