Socratic Seminar - 'The Dream'

Now that you have read the short story, 'The Dream,' share your ideas in the form of questions and what you are wondering about in regards to the story. You can refer to other people's ideas, but let's not answer questions here at the blog! We'll use our Socratic Seminar to explore questions and speculations.

Here are some points you can touch on (maybe you can think of others!):

* questions about some aspect of the story's plot

* questions about vocabulary and/or use of figurative language and symbolism

* questions you would ask the author

And here are some sentence starters you might want to use:

* I'd like to know...
* I'm not sure, but...
* I'm wondering why...
* What puzzles me is...
* I'm confused about...
* I'd like to ask the author...

I would like to ask the author why at the end of the story did she go off-topic and start talking about shoes? I know that the boy wanted to be like the other children and have shoes. But why did the author have a short paragraph about shoes?

Why did the mother all of a sudden take the boy to get a hamburger?

Why didn't the mother just take her money with her instead of leaving it with the lady?

This story was very touching and has taught me lot on the importance of money as there are a lot of people who don't have enough money to even feed themselves. Thus, it is important that we don't waste money as it could be put to better use. Through this story i had a thoguht that occured to me, how did the child not liking to wear any shoes, hae any connection with the true story? I would also like to ask the author what inspired him/her to write this story, was it an experience or was this all made up? What puzzles me is that the child was so coserned about his mother as children their age, I think only look up to theirmother for support. It also puzzles me that, that child was in a way trying to take care of his mother by offering to buy some food at the restaurant. While reading this story it struck me exactly how much affection this bo shows for his mother and how happy he is to be with her.

I am wondering why the boy thought that he wished he had a younger brother because then being seven would mean something. Why did he wanted a younger brother? Is it because he didn't felt that he was growing? Because his life was always the same, eating noodles everyday? I think having a younger brother doesn't change him feeling the same way of being seven.

I would also like to ask the same question as Morgan.
Why did the author suddenly talk about shoes at the end of the story?
Was it a clue to her next short story or did she just want it there?

I wonder why the author talks about shoes at the end. i just think that it's too off topic. I know that the boy wanted to go and feel how it's like being in a shop and wanted to be like other kids basically, he wanted to try a hamburger. While reading this story, it made me feel very sad and full of sympathy for people out there in this world. Kids like us everyday don't have a life that we do and i just think that it isn't fair.

What surprised me about this story was when the mother of kid took him to eat the burger. The mother had about 400 hundred baht in the tin but took the kid out for a 100 baht meal. So I wondered why the mother would spend a lot money (compared to what she had) to just please her kid with a meal of food that he wanted to eat. This story showed how lucky we are. This kid thinks that eating a burger is like a dream, but we don't have to dream to eat a burger knowing that we could have it any time.

While I was reading this short story, it made me think again that in some countries, there is a lot of poverty going on. The Thai boy in the story lived in a very poor condition and ate noodles everyday. Also, he did not even get a proper education. He doesn’t even know how to read nor write, which is really necessary for people to live a pleasant life. Later, it made me curious to know what actually makes poverty. I want to know what the actual root of the poverty is and where it starts from.

I would like to ask the author why she had never used the name of the food that the boy wanted to eat in her story.

I would like to know why the author had selected eating inside a restaurant as a dream for a boy. Can she relate this story to her own experience? Did she witness this scene? Or does she know this little boy?

What puzzles me is the last paragraph of the story. What was the author trying to say by “in dreams shoes does not matter”?

Is curiosity really worth something that costs one-fourth of all your money? That was the question that had me thinking after reading the story. The kid's mother spend a huge chunk of her life savings just for a hamburger for her child. I wouldn't have done it. Also, like what many people mentioned, I was puzzled at the part about shoes near the end. I didn't think it was that much relevant to the story.
From the story, I learned the value of money. Living in privileged atmosphere, I made me think about how hard it was for some people to earn money.

I would like to ask the author why she does not reveal the exact setting of the story or other details about it, such as the name of the restaurant, perhaps a description of the boy, or the surroundings.
I wonder why the author uses this exact or particular storyline and setting involving a poor boy and a restaurant for her story. I'd like to know whether the author can relate to this scene in a some way. Did she experience it or see it happening before at some point in her life? Can the author relate to someone who is similar to the little boy?
I also wonder why the boy wishes he had a younger brother and that he was older. Does he feel little and insignificant? Is the little boy feeling left out? Is his mother and/or family too occupied or busy to pay sufficient attention to him?
I'd like to agree with Morgan. What puzzles me is why the author refers to shoes in the ending and uses 'in dreams shoes did not matter' in the final paragraph. I wonder what she is trying to convey and feel that it is a little off-topic.

After reading the short story, I'm confused about when the author said the mother only had 400 baht, but she bought her son a 100 baht meal. In my opinion, the mother loved her son very much. Therefore, the relationship between the mother and the son was more important than the money. However, it doesn't mean that the mother will spent all the money every time the boy wanted something.

I'd like to ask the author what inspired him to write this article. Also I am eager to learn if this story was based of a true event. Another thing i would like to ask the author is where the story takes place, and what restaurant is the boy going to. Finally I would like to ask the author why he talked about shoes in his final paragraph. To me it does not fit in at all with the over all ending of the story.

I'm wondering why the author didn't tell us flat-out that the restaurant that the boy wanted to go into was Macdonalds because this makes you have extra curiosity. I would rather be wondering about the relationship between the boy and his mother or the reason why he wants the burger.

I want to know why his mother took him to the restraunt. They are very poor and they won't be able to go to a restraunt like that many times but his mother still took him to the restraunt.
Also, I wonder why the setting takes place at Thailand. I think there are more places where people are poor.

I'm confused about if the mom letting the boy have a hamburger was a right or wrong thing to do. There are some reasons why it might be right, but there also reasons that make it wrong. Also, I wondered what the author meant about adding the shoes at the end of the story.

I would like to know what made the author write the story. what was the setting of the story, in or out side of Bangkok. Was the story based on real life experience. Was the author making up the story? was the author looking for information like, prices of the hamburgers in that time. How long did it take the author to write the story?

The dream is a very nice story it really touched me
I would like to ask the anther about the part at the end with the shoes I mean it doesn’t related to anything. I am confused about the middle-end of the story were did his mom all of the sudden get a lot of money? And if she got a "lot" of money why did she waste on the McDonalds and not something useful like more cloth or food or anything else.
